Why upgrade an older board?

Older fuse boards and older consumer units may still work, but they often lack the level of protection now expected in a domestic installation. That can include limited RCD protection, poor labelling, older protective devices, damaged enclosures or layouts that make fault finding more difficult.
What does a modern board usually include?
Modern domestic consumer units are typically designed around improved circuit protection, better separation of circuits, RCD or RCBO protection and surge protection where required. The exact design depends on the installation, the circuits present and the condition of the existing wiring.
Why testing matters before and after
Before changing a board, the existing circuits need to be assessed. A new consumer unit can reveal faults that an older board did not respond to in the same way. After installation, the circuits must be tested and the work certified appropriately.
What should a customer expect?
A proper upgrade should include clear communication, safe isolation, careful workmanship, testing, labeling and certification. It should not simply be a case of swapping the box and walking away.
